The Introspection Series

The year 2020 was marked by events most of us won’t forget for the rest of our lives. Within what felt like minutes, our lives the way we knew them were turned upside down. It was as if our world stood still for a little while. Many of us looked inwards with our usual pastimes like meeting friends or eating out no longer an option. Reflection and introspection became the new 2020 hobby, so I turned to myself again to learn and grow during the lockdown period.

Through this period of self-observation came the inspiration for these pieces - snippets of thoughts, feelings, and ideas, translated into paint. I even discovered new techniques, such as using an electric power sander, and dared myself to venture into the world of mixing colors with only warm and cold primary colors plus black and white. These works symbolize the life we’ve lived in the past 14 months, a different kind of reality in a new kind of world. Let’s celebrate a unique year lived!

Released and shown to the public for the first time during our Vernissage “Unfolding” and Open Gallery & Studio Event for Obacht! Haidhausen July 1-4, 2021

“Soul-Searching” 2021

Mixed-media on Canvas || 60 x 60 cm ( 23.6 x 23.6 in )

I began this painting with the intention of capturing what life during the last year was like. I wanted to memorialize the feelings and thoughts we went through, which for many of us involved a lot of soul-searching. This meant taking an honest, in-depth look at who we are and what we care about, stripping away all of the distractions of our chaotic lives and leaving only our most vulnerable selves.

“The Transformation” 2021

Mixed-media on wood

30 x 30 cm ( 12 x 12 in )

In a nutshell, this painting captures the changes we've felt and lived through since March 2020. Ultimately I see, in myself and the people around me, a transformation. There's been a resurgence of looking within, reflecting, and working on our personal growth as we stand together through a really difficult year. I think all of us have taken something from this experience, whatever that may be, and this knowledge/familiarity we've gained about/with ourselves is truly invaluable.

“Cities Asleep” 2021

Mixed-media on wood

“Enigma” 2020

Mixed-media & Collage on wood

30 x 30 cm ( 12 x 12 in )

It's no question that a lot of our time in the last months has been spent shrouded in some kind of mystery at one point or another. Questions like what the challenges our world is facing mean for us and our communities, what the future will look like (even the future two months from now), and when we will be able to reunite with our loved ones again. Or, most importantly, "has my favorite restaurant reopened yet?"

Strawberry Fields by Tamiko Braun

“Strawberry Fields” 2020

Mixed-media & Japanese Rice paper on panel with cold wax medium finish

30 x 30 cm ( 12 x 12 in )

I just wanted to remember and feel when living is easy. This painting was inspired by the ideas of nostalgia and to never let go of your dreams.

I created this piece using my Japanese rice papers. Touching and playing with these materials took me back to when I was a little girl, remembering feeling of when living was easy. This painting was inspired by the ideas of nostalgia and to never let go of your dreams. When we climb over our imaginary wall, there are beautiful endless fields full of wildflowers and strawberries, enough to feed our souls forever.
